What happens on the 30-minute call?
By SortMyCover editorial team. Last reviewed . Fact-checked by SortMyCover editorial team on . See our editorial policy.
The call is booked for a time you pick. It lasts about 30 minutes, by video, WhatsApp call or phone. The adviser gives their name, FSP number and how they are paid. You decide afterwards, and SortMyCover sells nothing. This is information, not advice.
This page describes the call as a process. It says when it happens, how it is held and who is on it. It does not say what the call will lead to, because that is between you and the adviser.
Who is the call with?
The call is with an adviser at an authorised financial services provider (FSP). SortMyCover introduces you to one adviser and books the time. SortMyCover is not an FSP, does not give advice and is not on the call.
When does it happen and how long is it?
You pick a time from the times offered. The call does not start straight away. It is booked for a slot that suits you.
It is set for about 30 minutes. If you want to stop earlier, you can say so. The booking confirmation shows the day, the time and the channel you chose.
How is it held?
You choose the channel when you book. It can be a video call, a WhatsApp call or a phone call. Use a phone or a device with a connection. A quiet spot helps, because the adviser has to hear you well.
What does the adviser tell you first?
At the start the adviser gives:
- their name and the name of their firm
- their FSP number, so you can look it up on the FSCA register
- how they are paid
You do not have to wait for the call to look them up. How to check an adviser shows the steps.
What can you ask?
You can ask anything about the adviser and the process. Examples:
- Which products are you authorised to advise on?
- How are you paid, and does that change if I choose a product?
- What happens to my details after the call?
- What happens next, and when?
- Can I take time before I decide anything?
You can leave a question unanswered if you prefer not to share something. Do not send ID numbers, bank details or health details in a message. What to bring to your call has a checklist.
What is not part of the booking?
Booking the call is not an application for any product. SortMyCover does not take ID numbers or bank details when you book. It also does not take part in anything that happens between you and the adviser after the call.
Does the call cost anything?
The call costs you nothing. SortMyCover is paid a fee by advisers, and the fee does not depend on whether you buy anything. If you later choose a product, your adviser tells you how they are paid.
Who decides what happens after the call?
You do. Nothing is sold by SortMyCover, and nothing is decided during the booking. Anything that follows the call is between you and the adviser, and you can take your time over it.
What if something goes wrong?
If you are unhappy with the booking or with SortMyCover, how to complain sets out who to contact and in what order. A complaint about the adviser's advice goes first to the adviser's firm.
