How does SortMyCover work, and how does it make money?

Short answer

SortMyCover is paid a fee by advisers for the introduction. The fee does not depend on whether you buy anything. SortMyCover takes no commission and no share of any premium, and gives no financial advice. If you later choose a product, your adviser tells you how they are paid. This is information, not advice.

This page explains who is behind SortMyCover, what it does and what it does not do. It also explains where its money comes from, because that is a fair thing to ask.

Who runs SortMyCover?

SortMyCover is a service of Lead Velocity (Pty) Ltd, a South African company. Lead Velocity (Pty) Ltd trades as SortMyCover. The company's full details are in the footer of every page and in the privacy notice.

What does SortMyCover do?

It introduces people to an authorised financial services provider (FSP) and books a call. That is all. In order:

  1. You answer a few short questions and agree to be introduced.
  2. Your details go to one adviser at one FSP. The adviser's name, practice and FSP number are given to you in the first message.
  3. A 30-minute call is booked for a time that suits you.
  4. The call is with the adviser. SortMyCover is not on it.

You can read more in what happens on the 30-minute call.

What does SortMyCover not do?

SortMyCover is not a financial services provider. It does not give financial advice, quote premiums, compare products or rank insurers. It does not take part in any application. It does not sell anything.

How does SortMyCover make money?

Advisers pay SortMyCover a fee for the service. The fee does not depend on whether you buy anything. SortMyCover takes no commission and no share of any premium.

SortMyCover takes no commission and no share of any premium. Those words apply to SortMyCover only. They say nothing about how an adviser is paid.

Does it cost me anything?

The call costs you nothing. If you later choose a product, your adviser tells you how they are paid.

How is an adviser paid?

That depends on the adviser and on the product. Some advisers earn commission from the insurer. Some charge a fee. Some do both. An authorised adviser has a duty to disclose this. You can ask on the call, and the adviser gives it at the start. How to check an adviser shows how to confirm who they are first.

Why does it matter how SortMyCover is paid?

Because the way a business is paid can shape what it does. SortMyCover is paid per cycle by advisers, not per policy and not by you. It has no product of its own to sell.

How do I know who the adviser is?

The first message names the adviser, their practice and their FSP number. You can look the number up yourself on the FSCA register. The register is run by the FSCA, not by SortMyCover. It is worth looking before you share more.

Can I stop at any point?

Yes. Reply STOP to any WhatsApp message, or email hello@sortmycover.co.za with the word STOP. SortMyCover stops contacting you and tells the adviser. If you are unhappy with anything, how to complain lists the routes.

What happens to my details?

They go to the one adviser you agreed to. They are never sold. What happens to your details gives the plain-language version of the privacy notice.
