Written by the SortMyCover editorial team. Updated 2 October 2026.
Many payslips show a line such as group life, death benefit or risk benefit. This page explains what that line usually means. It is education only, not advice.
What group life cover is
Group life is cover an employer arranges for all staff in one scheme. It pays out money if a member dies while employed. Some payslips show a deduction for it. Others show nothing because the employer pays.
What it usually covers
- A lump sum paid if the member dies
- An amount worked out as a multiple of yearly salary
- Sometimes extra benefits, such as a funeral benefit
The exact terms are in the scheme rules. HR or the benefits administrator can share them.
What it usually does not cover
- Cover after the job ends
- Debts or costs that are bigger than the set multiple
- Needs that change after a new bond, a baby or other life event
Some schemes have limits and exclusions too. It is worth reading the rules.
Questions to ask HR
- How is the amount worked out?
- What happens to the cover if the job ends?
- Who is named as the beneficiary?
